Guitar Tone

I am listening to some Zappa right now and his guitar tone is just unreal. I am not talking about his playing, but the way the notes sound when they come out his guitar. Few guitar players have it. Neil Young is another guy. His tone is so distinct and mesmerizing. What are some other guitar players that have an identifying tone? Hendrix? Van Halen? Tone is different than playing style.
